Dr. Michael D. Pawlovich, a safety engineer with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), co-developed the SAVER (Safety, Analysis, Visualization and Exploration Resource) program, Iowa’s primary traffic-safety analysis resource. SAVER is a geographic information system-based software program that identifies and analyzes crashes that occur along Iowa’s roadways. With this information, DOT officials can make transportation-related changes or upgrades in a continuing effort to keep roads safe and traffic moving. It also provides the people of Iowa with county-specific data, such as where impaired driver, motorcycle, animal-vehicle, or speed-related crashes occurred. The data can then be used to not only encourage individuals to become safer drivers, but also to bring about an open discussion of appropriate driver safety practices.
