Born in Manchester, Iowa in the summer of 1930, Nelson would later graduate from the University of Iowa and serve in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees during the Korean conflict from 1951 through 1957. He eventually found his way back to Iowa and became a respected District Maintenance Engineer for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Here Nelson was tasked with keeping Iowa’s roads clear for motorists; his responsibilities included ongoing snow removal and road repairs.
